Hypogymnia enteromorphoides Elix

  Thallus irregular, to 15 cm wide, usually smaller. Lobes evenly inflated, convex, esorediate; central lobes contiguous to subcontiguous, 3–6 mm wide; marginal lobes narrower, dichotomously divided, ±contiguous, sometimes branching secondarily and lacking lateral contacts. Upper surface pale grey to grey, shining, smooth, with ±black lines and markings. Medullary layer thin to thick, sometimes darkened particularly adjacent to lower cortex, hollow. Lower surface strongly wrinkled, with scattered perforations near apices. Apothecia common, clustered, 1.5–20 mm wide, sessile to shortly pedicellate with urceolate base when young; disc deeply concave becoming flat or convex, cracked or occasionally perforated, ±shining, pale reddish brown; thalline exciple entire, ±involute becoming crenate. Ascospores 6–8 × 4–5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla KC+ red, P+ red. Atranorin, chloroatranorin, physodic acid (major); 3-hydroxyphysodic acid (minor); 2'-O-methylphysodic acid, alectoronic acid, physodalic acid and protocetraric acid (present or absent).
     
  Common in subalpine areas of N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.; also in W.A. Grows on twigs, bark and dead branches of trees and shrubs. Also in southern South America.
